Daesh [داعش dāʿish] is an acronym for the group’s name in Arabic [الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام al-Dawlah al-Islāmiyah fī’l-ʿIrāq wa-sh-Shām]. In the course of this volume, the group is referred to as ISIS.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi [الحشد الشعبي Al-Ḥashd Al-Shaʿbī] is also known as the People’s Mobilization, the Popular Mobilization Units, PMU, or the Popular Mobilization Forces, PMF. The name al-Hashd al-Shaabi is used in this study to refer to this organization.
