Sensor networks are increasingly being deployed and considered for diverse environments. They are applied in health care, industrial applications, environmental monitoring, agriculture, smart buildings, warehouse tracking, transport logistics and surveillance. The advantages of wireless sensing range from easy deployment, cheaper equipment and enhanced mobility and portability. It should be easy to integrate them into wired distributed sensing systems, backbone information systems operating them and collecting their measurements or other forms of collection and computational devices. Middleware plays an essential role for that objective. In order to create systems that can be deployed in diverse application scenarios, can handle heterogeneity and distribution and yet can integrate with the rest of the systems, it is necessary to define configuration and operation middleware systems that fulfil the needed objectives. This chapter discusses issues and challenges rising from the inclusion of wireless sensors in industrial networks. Then the chapter presents a small description of chapter organization for the rest of the book, where each chapter describes one specific issue that leads the reader to better understand the concepts behind configuration and operation over heterogeneous distributed control systems and middleware that is necessary to do that.
