While oxidized, chloride-rich, intersti-tial brines produce redbeds from rapidly deposited coarse-grained rift-basin fills, the redbeds may be leached of their trace copper contents, thereby providing a source of copper for the formation of sediment-hosted stratiform copper deposits in nearby greybeds. The reddening process should lower the Eh of the brine such that the brine becomes suitable for iron solubility. In a simple conceptual analysis, iron could be transported toward the greybeds ahead of the infiltration by cupriferous brines.
