In the Middle Kingdom and Empire of the Rising Sun: Sino-Japanese Relations, Past and Present, June Teufel Dreyer explains the fraught relationship between China and Japan with reference to the long history of unequal bilateral status, specifically that both China and Japan refuse to treat each other with equal status. Part I of the book follows this relationship in chronological order, with a brief account from the seventh century all the way to recent conflicts in 2015. Part II focuses on different themes, including economic and military rivalry, and special issues like Taiwan and North Korea are discussed. In the conclusion, the author emphases that Japan has long refused to be treated subordinately by China, and this is the source of fraught bilateral relations. …
