China’s trade with Latin America grew from $10 billion in 2000 to $257 billion in 2013, and from 2000 to 2014, bilateral trade between Latin America and the Caribbean and China expanded 22 times. With growing trade and direct investment, China has helped reshape the economy of several countries in the region. If such trends continue, China might surpass the U.S. as Latin America’s largest trading partner. Despite the slowdown of the Chinese economy, China will continue to be an important influence in the region, a development that raises concern in the Western Hemisphere. …
