Abstract
This Chapter presents FAO land evaluation techniques, in which environmental, economic and social criteria are used to analyze implications of land use changes, both within forestry uses as also from forestry to other uses. With socio-economic development, the need arises for evaluation of competing claims of land for alternative uses; to investigate questions such as: Which kind of land use? Which kind of forestry? Which kind of forest management? Such studies are obviously interdisciplinary, calling for inter-departmental cooperation, lacking in many countries. The need for securing the participation of the local people in planning and decision making process is also very critical. This may be needed at four stages of evaluation: analysis of present problems, suggestions for improvements, selection of responses, and the determination of the role of local institutions in planning and implementation.
