Latin@ Youth Involved and the Justice System: A Review of Recent Ethnography

Recent qualitative and quantitative criminological research has focused on how youth interact with the educational and criminal justice institutions they might become involved with in adolescence. Jamie Fader employed observations and interviews to explore the effects of a rehabilitation program in a correctional detention setting on the life trajectories of African-American male adolescents involved in the justice system (Fader 2013). And in his book concerning the impact of increased surveillance in schools (with practices such as implementing metal detectors, adopting zero tolerance policies and increasing the presence of law enforcement officers in schools), Kupchik (2016) found that these punitive practices increase the incidence of students becoming involved in the criminal justice system through arrest and disproportionately affect students of color. …
