GKS, as a general-purpose graphical kernel system, is designed to address most of the existing graphics devices as well as most graphics applications. GKS implementations have to serve a wide range of applications, from static plotting to dynamic motion and real time interaction. In addition, GKS systems have to support a large variety of graphics devices, from simple plotters, microfilms, and storage tubes, to highly sophisticated vector devices and real time raster-scan devices. Furthermore, they have to be installed on various processors which differ in aspects such as their word length (starting from 8 bits/word) and storage handling facilities (restricted memory size, slow external storage media, up to virtual memory management).
