JPEG is an acronym for “Joint Photographic Experts Group,” the popular name for working group WG1 of the ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1, Study Committee 9 (ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG1 in full). The WG1 committee has produced several international standards for image compression. The first and most well known of these is what we call the JPEG compression standard [5]. More particularly, the baseline algorithm described in [5] is the most widely known system for lossy image compression. Less well known is the fact that the JPEG standard actually describes a family of lossy image compression algorithms, along with a lossless compression algorithm.
