The English moral philosopher, jurist, social reformer, political economist, and founding father of modern utilitarianism, Jeremy Bentham, casts a long shadow over the development of modern jurisprudence and the social sciences. Both defenders and critics of legal primitivism, public administration, and modern welfare economics credit Bentham’s influence in the development of these fields of inquiry.
