Über dieses Buch

Based on multiple case study analysis, focusing on scalable service innovation, the present study provides a practical process model that shall serve telecommunication companies as a guideline while conducting strategic cross-industry innovation projects. The findings also pay attention to characteristics in cross-industry collaboration, organizational preconditions and strategic deliberations and postulate propositions for present theoretical innovation process models.

Frontmatter
1. Introduction
Abstract
The first chapter introduces the research topic and explains why the specific subject was chosen. It covers practical status quo and latest research development. In addition, it defines the present studies objective and describes its research setting.
Tobias Hahn
2. Theoretical Background
Abstract
This chapter describes the main terms of the research and its underlying theoretical foundation in the context of literature review.
Tobias Hahn
3. Methodology
Abstract
Guided by the research processes defined by Österle et al. (1991) and focusing the major concepts incorporated in Eisenhardt’s (1989) research roadmap process, this chapter describes how the relevant theoretical concepts and procedure are applied in the present study to build practical oriented theory from case study research (Österle et al. 1991; Eisenhardt 1989). The approach is highly iterative, tightly linked to data and especially appropriate in new topic areas (Eisenhardt 1989).

4. Within-Case Analysis
Abstract
The following chapter is based on interviews conducted with representatives of a European telecommunication company and innovation partner companies from energy, automotive and health industry (cf. chapter 3.5). It contains three case studies, describing five cross-industry innovation projects. They follow a consistent analysis framework (Yin 1981), covering (1) Initial situation, Objectives and Description of the Service, (2) Scope and Structure, (3) Chronology and Phases of the Innovation Process, (4) Cross-Industry Collaboration and Competences, (5) Project and Company specific Organization and Processes, (6) Retrospective and Key Findings.
Tobias Hahn
5. Cross-Case Analysis
Abstract
This chapter outlines findings across all projects. It is an intermediate step to the generated theory and structures notes evolved from the case studies.
Tobias Hahn
6. Analysis and Discussion of Findings with Existing Literature
Abstract
Literature review is another source of data, generally conducted in the sorting phase of notes that supports the development of a theory. Following Glaser & Strauss (1967) it relates first findings and notes with existing literature (Dunne 2011; Glaser & Strauss 1967, p.37). Guided by the evolved concepts and overarching categories this chapter analyzes first findings and gives new impulses for the emerging theory based on literature review (Eisenhardt 1989). Both support to formulate more precisely practical strategic implications for telecommunication companies conducting cross-industry innovation projects.
Tobias Hahn
7. Practical Strategic Implications
Abstract
This chapter describes the strategic implications for telecommunication companies. Grounded and as an immediate consequence of the constituted categories project, company, collaboration and market, first findings got reviewed and developed in literature (cf. chapter 6), and thus, in this chapter illustrates the iteratively emerged theory.
Tobias Hahn
8. Impact on Existing Theoretical Innovation Process Models
Abstract
Following Österle et al. (1991, p. 35) and Riempp (2004, pp. 314-316) a profound research process not just provides practical, but also theoretical contributions (Österle et al. 1991, p.35; Riempp 2004, pp.314–316) (cf. chapter 1.3). Putting the explicitly described practical strategic implications for telecommunication companies (cf. chapter 7) in reference with existing innovation models (cf. chapter 2.3) it gets obvious, that major characteristics of cross-industry service innovation projects are not considered in present literature to its full extent. Accordingly, based on the new insights this chapter deduces cross-industry innovation specific propositions and visualizes them in an extended theoretical innovation process model.
Tobias Hahn
9. Conclusion
Abstract
This chapter summarizes the key findings of the present study and its contribution to contemporary theory and practice. It also identifies limitations and suggests topics for further research.
