Regular ArticleLaCoO3 Revisited
Abstract
Homogeneous samples of LaCoO3 were prepared from coprecipitated precursors; they reveal that single-phase samples are restricted to a narrow range of the [La]/[Co] ratio of about 1.0. A first-order phase change near 1200 K only appears where Co3O4 is present as an impurity phase. Evolution with temperature from all low-spin Co(III) at T = 0 K to 50% high-spin Co3+ and 50% intermediate-spin Co(III) above 650 K is monitored with magnetic susceptibility, resistance, and thermopower measurements. Evidence is found for a dynamic ordering of high-spin Co3+ and low-spin Co(III) in the intermediate-temperature interval 110 K < T < 350 K. The lifetime of a Co3+ ion decreases with increasing temperature to a τ < 10-8 sec for T > 200 K. The intermediate-temperature phase is semiconductive with an Eg ≈ 0.14 eV for excitations of hole-electron pairs. The holes are mobile; the electrons are trapped as Co2+ on high-spin sites until they recombine with a mobile hole. The metallic high-temperature phase for T > 650 K is nucleated and grows with increasing temperature in the interval 350 K < T < 650 K.

Structural phase stability and thermodynamical properties of transition metal complex hydrides Na<inf>2</inf>MgTMH<inf>7</inf> (TM=Sc−Cu) for hydrogen storage applications
2023, Journal of Solid State ChemistryIn order to predict ground state structure as well as thermodynamical properties of transition metal-based complex hydrides (TMCHs) and identify potential hydrogen storage materials for energy storage applications, we have performed first-principles density functional spin polarized total energy calculations for Na2MgTMH7 where TM = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu. To investigate the thermodynamical properties of transition metal-based complex hydrides (TMCHs) and to find potential hydrogen storage materials for energy storage applications. Our spin-polarized calculations show that all these materials are having a finite magnetic moment at the transition metal site with ferromagnetic or anti−ferromagnetic ordering as ground state configuration except the cases where TM = Sc, Co, Ni, and Cu. Our calculated enthalpy of formation and hydrogen site energy of TMCHs suggest that these systems are stable and the hydrogen is expected to release at a relatively low temperature compared to that of pure binary hydrides. We have performed the chemical bonding analyses between the constituents of TMCHs through density of states, charge density, electron localization function, Born effective charge, Bader effective charge, Mulliken charge, and COHP and these analyses suggest that there is an ionic bonding between hydrogen with Na, Mg, and transition metal with noticeable covalent bonding between hydrogen and Mg/TM.
Ferromagnetism in LaMnO<inf>3</inf>-LaFeO<inf>3</inf>-LaCoO<inf>3</inf> mixed spin perovskite oxide solid solution
2023, Ceramics InternationalThe solid solution polycrystalline powder sample of LaMnO3 - LaFeO3 – LaCoO3 was synthesized via mixed-oxide method in 1:1:1 ratio by mass by following two step synthesis process (I) synthesis of LaMnO3, LaFeO3 and LaCoO3 by sol – gel method and (II) synthesis of LaMnO3 - LaFeO3 – LaCoO3 polycrystalline solid solution powder by solid state reaction method. The resulting solid solution crystallizes as a blend of orthorhombic and cubic crystal structure (Space group: Pna21 + Pm m). The magnetic characterization in this mixed spin oxide solid solution reveals ferromagnetic nature from 50 K to 300 K. The appearance of stepped hysteresis loop (M − H plot) with two magnetic saturation states at 50 K is the characteristic exclusively exhibited by mixed spin oxide solid solution. Above 50 K only single magnetic saturation state exists with persistent hysteresis loop, thus, confirming the ferromagnetic nature up to 300 K.
Electron–orbital–lattice interactions in hollow multishelled structures
2022, Trends in ChemistryHollow multishelled structures (HoMSs), an emergent solid-state material family featuring multiple shells separated by internal cavities, are gaining intensive interest in applications exercising their temporal–spatial ordering or dynamic smart behavior. Although the assembled shell structures and tailored building blocks on the nanometer/micrometer (nano/micro) scale have been extensively studied, understanding of the interplay among the different degrees of freedom (i.e., charge, spin, orbital, and lattice) in HoMSs remains in its infancy. In this review, the new trend in HoMS chemistry regarding the influence of interactions among electron–orbital–lattice on the attractive physicochemical properties of HoMSs is investigated. By demonstrating pioneering work regulating the optical, electronic, catalytic, and magnetic properties of HoMSs, we uncover performance enhancements from an atomic perspective. Hopefully, the new research outlook in HoMSs inspires innovative prospects for the rational design of HoMS materials by using alternative degrees of freedom and/or tailoring their mutual interactions.
Grain boundary engineered, multilayer graphene incorporated LaCoO<inf>3</inf> composites with enhanced thermoelectric properties
2022, Ceramics InternationalEnhancement of thermoelectric properties by virtue of decreased electrical resistance through grain boundary engineering is realised in this study. A robust strategy of optimisation of the transport properties by tuning the energy filtering effects at the interfaces by decreasing the interfacial electrical resistance is achieved in LaCoO3 (LCO). This is accomplished by the incorporation of multilayer graphene within the parent LCO matrix containing multi-scale nano/micro grains. The present work has attained a substantial increment in electrical conductivity from a value of 96 Scm-1 for bare LCO to ∼5300 Scm-1 at 750 K by incorporating 0.08 wt% multilayer graphene in LCO. No significant change in thermal conductivity is observed due to the presence of multilayer graphene in LCO. A zT of 0.33 at 550 K for 0.08 wt% multi-layer graphene incorporated LCO composite is achieved which is the highest thermoelectric figure of merit value for undoped LCO reported until now.
Exchange interaction between the high spin Co3+ states in LaCoO<inf>3</inf>
2022, Computational Materials ScienceThe formation of the exchange interaction between HS Co ions, which are excited in LaCoO, is studied within the multielectron approach. Two main contributions appear to be antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM). When the ground state is LS, the total interaction is AFM. The crossover to the HS state may result in the FM ordering. The mean-field magnetic phase diagrams on the plane spin gap-temperature have been calculated without and with spin-orbital interaction in the HS term. Without spin-orbital interaction the reentrant magnetic order is possible. The spin-orbital coupling removes the reentrant phase transition and stabilizes the LS state. For known from experimental data values of the spin gap and exchange interaction, the ideal stoichiometric LaCoO is very close to the LS–HS crossover and magnetic ordering border. The violations of local coordination and symmetry of the Co-oxygen complexes that take place in the intergrain boundaries, at the surface of single crystals, and in the thin films on the strained substrate, may result in the formation of the HS state and FM order for such materials.
Synthesis, structural and impedance response of (Ba-Sr)-Co-O nanoparticles
2021, Physica B: Condensed MatterBarium strontium cobaltite (BSC) (Ba0.5Sr0.5CoO3−δ) samples were successfully produced through modified chemical synthesis procedures. The methods used are hydrothermal, without water and surfactant (WOWS) sol-gel and co-precipitation technique. The effect of different synthesis procedures on structure, morphology and electrical conduction behaviour of BSC samples was studied. X-Ray diffraction showed the development of orthorhombic phase pure perovskite structure. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the synthesis of perovskite structure by revealing its fingerprint peaks. Morphological studies by SEM displayed evenly dispersed, agglomerated and micro porous like morphology. Nyquist plots as a function of frequency displayed single semi-circular arcs. These arcs are an indication of grain boundary contribution in the electrical conduction mechanism. Modulus study displayed the Debye type conductivity relaxation. AC conductivity curves agreed well with Jonscher's power rule. Hydrothermally synthesized samples have the least impedances at higher frequencies. That form them possible candidate for cathode material in (IT-SOFCs) applications.
