Abstract
The Asian origins of the Maori are lost in the mists of an antiquity still unexplored by modern archaeology. The probable source, the direction of movement, the general level of cultural development, and the approximate age are known, but the actual sites with their ancient occupation layers have yet to be discovered. In large part this is because there has been little excavation on which such knowledge would depend in the islands and mainland of Southeast Asia. For this reason only an outline can be presented of the ancestral languages, populations, and cultural complexes which eventually gave rise to those we now call Maori.
