Abstract
A dynamic dilatometer for measuring piezoelectric strain constants of insulators and semiconductors is described. The application of modulation techniques allows precise measurements on samples as small as 1 mm3 and of fairly high electrical conductivity. Results for the piezoelectric constants of zinc-blende type CuCl, CuBr and Cul are reported. The piezoelectric behaviour is related to properties of the chemical bond.
