Abstract

An analysis of factors controlling the stability of asphalt-polyolefin emulsions is given. From flocculation kinetics and changes in particle size distributions, it is concluded that the major cause of instability is due to Brownian coalescence followed by gravitational flocculation and creaming. A cyclical change in the particle size distribution, indicative of simultaneous flocculation and creaming, is observed only in the final stages of the emulsion breakdown.
