Ecological, phytogeographical and taxonomic problems with desmids

Conclusion

That diverse problems of ecological, geographical and taxonomic nature concerning the Desmidiaceae, such as described here, so often show a similarity with those concerning the Phanerogams indicates that the processes of speciation and area-building in both plant groups may have followed a similar, although of course not always exactly the same path.

However, in considering such phenomena we must realize that, here as well as there, taxa which we describe with a binary specific name can have reached completely different stages in their gradual development and internal maturing to ecologically, genetically and chorologically consolidated entities at species level.

The experimental tracing of such a course of development in successive stages of speciation could perhaps, for groups such as the above mentionedMicrasterias-forms, be tested in cultures according to the methods worked out byE. G. Pringsheim andR. C. Starr for growing and inducing conjugation between heterothallic clones.
