Mass breeding of two species ofSaissetia [Hom.: Coccidae] for propagation of their parasitoids

Abstract

Potato sprouts detached from soil are most suitable for mass rearingSaissetia oleae (Olivier),S. coffeae (Walker) and their parasitoids, since the duration of development of the coccids is short, and they can be grown easily with their natural enemies in closed containers under controlled conditions.S. oleae served for propagation ofMetaphycus affinisstanleyi Compere,M. helvolus (Compere),M. bartletti Annecke & Mynhardt,M. lounsburyi (Howard), whilstS. coffeae was better suited forScutellista cyanea Motschulsky. The ornamental plantAdhatoda vasica Nees, citron melon and squash fruits served for rearingS. coffeae, while oleander was used for breedingS. oleae and its parasitoids during the ebb of the culture on potato sprouts.

Les germes de pomme de terre prélevés du sol sont l'aliment le meilleur pour l'élevage en masse deSaissetia oleae (Olivier), deS. coffeae (Walker) et de leurs parasites, car la durée du développement des cochenilles est brève et on peut conduire l'élevage dans des récipients fermés dans des conditions contrôlées.S. oleae a été utilisé pour la multiplication d'unMetaphycus proche destanleyi Compere, deM. helvolus (Compere),M. bartletti Annecke & Mynhardt,M. lounsburyi (Howard) alors queS. coffeae convient mieux pourScutellista cyanea Motschulsky. La plante d'ornementAdhatoda vasica Nees, la citrouille et les courges sont employés pour l'élevage deS. coffeae. Le laurier-rose a servi à la production deS. oleae et de ses parasites pendant le manque de germes de pomme de terre.
