Abstract

The cell wall components of woody cells were examined at the ultrastructural level using enzymatic hydrolysis, delignification, steam pressure pulping and direct in situ localization by cytochemical methods. Based on the arrangement and localization of lignin, cellulose, hemicelluloses and pectic substances the already existing theories of three-dimensional wall architecture are discussed.
