Abstract
The addition of 0.18 at. Pct Mg to a 2XXX (Al-2.6 at. Pct Cu) aluminum alloy was found to increase strength in all types of commercially important tempers. The effect of the Mg addition was maximum in artificially aged materials which were cold worked prior to aging. However, in naturally aged materials, the benefit to strength from the addition of Mg decreased with cold work. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to explain the improved properties based on the microstructure. Mechanisms by which the Mg addition alters the microstructure and improves the yield strength are proposed.
