Abstract
The elevated temperature stability of the Al−Al3Ni rod eutectic is reexamined at 600°C. The original coarsening process is found to be two-dimensional Ostwald ripening. The morphology produced by this process is intrinsically stable but is subject to subsequent breakdown which is most likely due to the presence of longitudinal growth defects. Coarsening resumes after breakdown of the stable structure and is characterized by two-dimensional anisotropic Ostwald ripening. Extensive fiber shortening also takes place in this latter stage of coarsening.
