Abstract

The effect of the welding cycle on the fatigue strength of spot welded lap shear specimens is studied through the use of accurate investigation tools. The combination of three techniques: potential drop method to track the crack evolution, fracture surface observation and metallographic examinations, enables to analyze efficiently the fatigue behaviour. The fatigue strength remains constant over the welding range and a mechanism explanation is provided. An outstanding fatigue strength improvement, corresponding to a 40% increase on initiation stage, is obtained by changing welding patterns and weld time. This study is performed on a DP600 homogenous assembly.
