Developments in transition metal cluster chemistry — The way to large clusters

Clusters

Part of the book series: Structure and Bonding ((STRUCTURE,volume 62))

Abstract

The structure determining rules of transition metal clusters can be divided into two fields of problems. The ligand shell obeys a pattern, following the principle of minimized repulsion on a sphere.

Quantitative descriptions of the chemical bond in large clusters are still unsatisfactory. For small and medium sized clusters some electron counting rules are sensible, whereas for large clusters extended consideration seems to be necessary. Clusters represent intermediates on the way from complexes to metals and hence open a novel line of research. This development is still in its early stages. The effect on different disciplines in chemistry is obvious. Especially large clusters shall serve as models for metal surfaces and give us an insight into the events in catalysis, something which has not been possible until now.
