Abstract

Radiation attenuation behavior of lithium cadmium silicate glasses (abbreviated as SiBiX glasses) with different concentrations of Bi2O3 were investigated using Phy-X/PSD software. The mass attenuation coefficients (MAC) of the selected glasses were determined at a wide range of energies. The results demonstrated that increasing the Bi2O3 content of the glasses, or likewise decreasing the SiO2 content of the glass system, increases the MAC of the material. At low energy, there is a significant difference between the MAC values of the samples with lowest and highest Bi2O3 content, where the difference is 1.047 cm2/g at 0.122 MeV and only 0.069 cm2/g at 0.344 MeV. The linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) results demonstrated that introducing more Bi2O3 content increases the LAC values of the glasses. The LAC values for the present glasses are to 1.533, 2.079, 2.471, and 2.892 cm−1 for SiBi1, SiBi2, SiB3, and SiBi4, while at 1.299 MeV. We calculated the enhancement in LAC due to the addition of Bi2O3 and we found that, the enhancement is equal to 2.07 at 0.122 MeV and drops down with increasing energy to a low of 1.29 at 1.458 MeV. We investigated the relation between the density of the present glasses and their half value layer values (HVL). The results showed a decreasing trend in the HVL when the density increases from 4.42 to 5.60 g/cm3. We also evaluated the tenth value layer (TVL) and compared between the HVL and TVL for the same glass at certain energy. The results showed that the TVL is much greater than the HVL values at any energy. From the HVL and TVL we found that in order to achieve greater protection from radiation, the thickness of the glasses can be increased which will lead to greater attenuation.
