Sehen wir uns die Figur des Hackers aus der Nähe an. Zu Unrecht haben die Berichte über spektakuläre Aktionen den Hacker auf einen reinen „Cracker“, d. h. schadenstiftenden Einbrecher, oder „Crasher“, welcher ein System zum Absturz bzw. zur totalen Blockade bringt, reduziert. Ursprünglich ging es um etwas anderes; ja das Wort „Hack“ reicht sogar weiter zurück als die elektronische Datenverarbeitung. Ein „Hack“ war ursprünglich ein Ausdruck für journalistisches Arbeiten mit unorthodoxen Mitteln. Was sich dann sehr schnell auf den Bereich der Datenverarbeitung übertrug, denn seit jeher waren die Programmierer gefordert, Umwege zu machen und kreative Lösungen zu entwickeln. Nur so war es möglich, mit den Begrenztheiten von Programmiersprachen, Betriebssystemen und Hardware-Ressourcen wie z. B. Speicherplatz fertig zu werden. David J. Gunkel (2001, 6) schreibt hierzu: „[...] hacking is a form of exploring and manipulating that not only learns how a specific system behaves but also discovers how to employ its tools and procedures against and in excess of the necessary limitations of its own programming.“
