Chapter 1. What’s New with LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3
Abstract
It is always difficult to determine what audience this book will find its hands in, and I am going to assume that most readers have at least heard of LEGO MINDSTORMS. LEGO offers many instructions with their LEGO MINDSTORMS kits, but this book is really about how to get the most out of LEGO MINDSTORMS. My desire is that you use the concepts and precepts in this book to make just about anything with LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 parts.

Chapter 2. Programming with the EV3 Language
Abstract
Now that you have been introduced to the pieces that you will need for building excellent LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 models, let’s talk about how to do one of the most important things: programming the EV3 Brick. One of the challenges in building with LEGO MINDSTORMS is that “building is only half the battle.” Once you get your motors and sensors properly constructed on your MINDSTORMS machine, you are going to have to tell it what to do. This will require programming skills, and the EV3 Brick is your microcomputer of choice.

Chapter 3. Creating a LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Vehicle
Abstract
Now that we have learned some basics of programming on LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3, it is time to talk about a popular project among LEGO MINDSTORMS enthusiasts, building a vehicle. Not only am I going to talk about how to make a decent vehicle, but I am also going to talk about how you can program a vehicle to do all kinds of things such as propulsion, steering, and using the other sensors to work with it.

Chapter 4. Creating Visuals, Making Sounds, and Using Data on the EV3 Brick
Abstract
Since I already discussed how to connect the motors to the EV3 Brick to make things happen, I think it is time that I discuss the particulars about sight, sound, and lights on the EV3 brick. This is somewhat complex, and I wanted to devote an entire chapter to this.

Chapter 5. Data Logging and Advanced Programming Blocks
Abstract
As discussed in the introduction, one of the reasons that LEGO MINDSTORMS was originally conceived was for scientific data logging. If you are familiar with any of the sciences, it is all about collecting information or data and using it to prove (or disprove) some sort of hypothesis. That is the scientific method in a nutshell, and EV3 has software built into the EV3 Brick and Software to help you collect whatever data you need to prove or disprove your theories.

Chapter 6. Special Construction Projects and Macros
Abstract
Now that I covered creating a vehicle in Chapter 3 as well as advanced programming steps in Chapter 5, I imagine you want to make that vehicle do all kinds of things. This chapter discusses how to create a lot of specialized vehicles like forklifts, cranes, scissorlifts, and other types of construction equipment.
Mark Rollins
Chapter 7. The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Robot Arm
Abstract
In the last chapter, we covered how to make some interesting EV3 creations that are similar to those found on a construction site. In this chapter, I’m going to discuss how to create some fascinating robot parts for some unique combinations, starting with the Robot Arm.

Chapter 8. Thinking like a LEGO MINDSTORMS Creator and the Walking Robot
Abstract
As I have said before, this book is not about giving you some instructions for models, and then giving you the programs that you will need to run them. LEGO is all about creation, and I see little reason to give you things to build when the true joy of LEGO is creating a masterpiece that you can proudly say: “see that, I made that from start to finish.” And “I put my blood, sweat, and tears into that.” Do you really want to just build something from instructions and show it off saying: “hey, I followed the instructions.”
