The development of Total Quality approaches within the supply chain is not a recent phenomenon. Indeed, the ideas of building quality into purchasing practice can be seen in the work of Deming and Juran in the 1960s and 1970s. What is perhaps more recent is the evolution, not of joint quality management strategies, but of joint quality improvement strategies serving as a foundation for a long-term, developing, overall business relationship. Indeed, in a Total Quality (TQ)-driven partnership, the relationship itself - its organization, management and resourcing -becomes a quality issue on the joint customer supplier improvement agenda.
