The Marine Mollusks of the Galápagos

Determinants of Insular Marine Faunas

Galápagos Marine Invertebrates

Part of the book series: Topics in Geobiology ((TGBI,volume 8))

Abstract

Charles Darwin, on his visit to the Galápagos Islands, celebrated the “eminently curious” creatures of the land, but paid scant attention to marine organisms. Two comments, however, indicate that Darwin recognized that the marine mollusks were also unique: 1) “... of the ninety shells no less than forty-seven are unknown elsewhere—a wonderful fact, considering how widely distributed sea-shells generally are” (Darwin, 1906, p. 376); and 2) “We have... in this quarter of the world, three great conchological sea-provinces, quite distinct...” (Darwin, 1906, p. 376).
