Über dieses Buch

The purpose of this monograph is to characterize and describe the quality of machined wood surfaces, whereas particular attention is given to the utility and to aesthetical values in product design. The approach employed by the authors involves an introductory overview and is then organized in three parts: first, the book deals with factors influencing surface stability, the second part describes the color and gloss properties of wood surfaces with many practical applications, and the third part covers roughness properties of surfaces related to machining. This is a highly informative and carefully presented book, providing valuable insight for both research experts and practitioners with an interest in machined wood surfaces.

Chapter 1. Overview
Abstract
The quality of machined wood surfaces is a primary and important physical and aesthetical characteristic of any wood product. There term “quality” is a complex and sophisticated notion and the overall quality of a wood surface may be influenced by an array of physical, mechanical and aesthetical properties. Among the physical properties, the surface geometry and the surface roughness, play an important role in directly influencing a lot of other properties. The same concerns the photodegradation and stability of surfaces, which also directly affect many important properties. The Overview gives a brief description of the subject with outlooks and future possibilities.

Chapter 2. Wood Surface Stability
Abstract
Wood surface stability itself is a complex property having far-reaching connections with the general resistance to artificial and environmental influences as a function of time. Any deterioration in the physical and mechanical properties of the surface layer changes in colour fundamentally decrease the utility and aesthetical value of a product. This chapter treats the main environmental influences such as the light irradiation, moisture and temperature changes, and the artificial treatments (steaming, irradiation, hot air) and outdoor weathering. In wood materials, moisture is always present and plays an important role in all environmental and artificial influences. Therefore, moisture exchange with the air and the moisture movement in wood structures are discussed. Hardness and abrasion resistance of wood surfaces are also treated.

Chapter 3. Colour Characterisation of Wood
Abstract
The colour and gloss of wood is very important aesthetical property and it has a fundamental influence on the commercial value of timbers. Nevertheless, the use of colour measurements and evaluations in practice is unsatisfactory also today. In this Chapter a new colour estimation method has been introduced with many practical applications and representation techniques. Based on detailed experiments, the most important relations of the gloss of wood surfaces are presented with practical applications. Some examples of the new multi-angle colour measurement are also given.

Chapter 4. Surface Roughness of Wood
Abstract
Roughness plays an important role in the surface quality evaluation. The aesthetic value of a wood product is strongly related to its surface topography. The roughness of wood surface depends on many influencing factors and it can be related to both wood anatomical properties and machining operational parameters. This chapter treats all aspects of surface roughness such as its origins and the interrelations among the roughness parameters. A fairly new topic is the effect of wetting on the surface roughness. Both 2D and 3D measurements are described and compared.
