Über dieses Buch

This book describes in a comprehensive manner the technical aspects of separation of rare earth elements into individual elements for industrial and commercial use. The authors include details on and differentiate among the effective separation of rare earth elements for various parts of the world. They introduce new applications of separation of rare earth elements from concentrates of diverse ore types.

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Rare Earth Elements and Minerals
Abstract
The electronic configurations, physical and chemical properties and applications of rare earth elements, rare earth minerals and resources, as well as some chemical separation technologies of rare earth elements are discussed in this chapter.
Jack Zhang, Baodong Zhao, Bryan Schreiner
Chapter 2. Rare Earth Beneficiation and Hydrometallurgical Processing
Abstract
Prior to individual REE separation, the rare earth ore will go through a series of physical separation and hydrometallurgical processing. In this chapter, the rare earth ore beneficiation, mineral concentrate decomposition, and rare earth leaching are introduced briefly.
Jack Zhang, Baodong Zhao, Bryan Schreiner
Chapter 3. Solvent Extraction in Metal Hydrometallurgy
Abstract
The rare earth produced from different ores or solutions is a mixed product containing various individual rare earth elements. To separate them to individual elements presents one of the most challenging separation tasks in metal hydrometallurgy. In comparison with the complex and lengthy processes such as fractional precipitation and crystallization, solvent extraction, also called liquid–liquid extraction, offers a more flexible approach that allows for the production of individual rare earth elements at required purities and quantities. Solvent extraction is currently the dominant technology to separate and purify the individual rare earth elements. The basics of solvent extraction in metal hydrometallurgy are discussed in this chapter.
Jack Zhang, Baodong Zhao, Bryan Schreiner
Chapter 4. Rare Earth Solvent Extraction Systems
Abstract
Rare earth solvent extraction systems are discussed according to the extractant. The rare earth solvent extraction mechanism, separation factors, separation processes, and affecting factors in each extraction system are discussed in detail in this chapter.
Jack Zhang, Baodong Zhao, Bryan Schreiner
Chapter 5. Cascade Solvent Extracting Principles and Process Design
Abstract
Currently, cascade solvent extraction processes are predominantly used in industrial rare earth separation. Professor Xu and co-workers developed the rare earth cascade solvent extraction principles and these methods for process design have been widely used by the rare earth separation industry. These principles and methods have been proved realible and valid in over 30 years of industrial practice of rare earth separation. With the adoption of advanced computing technology, the application of these principles and methods have been progressed and extended to new rare earth separation process design and simulation. Xu’s rare earth cascade solvent extraction principles and methods are discussed in detail in this chapter.
Jack Zhang, Baodong Zhao, Bryan Schreiner
Chapter 6. Rare Earth Solvent Extraction Equipment
Abstract
Industrial solvent extraction equipment inlcudes stage-type extractors, column-type extractors, and centrifugal extractors. The industrial solvent extraction equipment classification, selection criteria, and basic design are discussed in this chapter.
Jack Zhang, Baodong Zhao, Bryan Schreiner
