Abstract

Business process modeling (BPM) has become primary concern for any successful organization to improve the management of their individual and collective crucial knowledge. In this paper, we propose a new multi-perspective meta-model of business processes modeling for knowledge management (KM), called BPM4KI (Business Process Meta-Model for Knowledge Identification). This meta-model is semantically rich and well founded on COOP, a core ontology of organization’s processes. It covers all aspects of BPM and KM: the functional, organizational, behavioral, informational, intentional and knowledge perspectives. The aim of BPM4KI is to develop a rich and expressive graphical representation of BPs, especially, the sensitive business processes (SBPs) in order to identify and localize the crucial knowledge that is mobilized and created by these processes. Besides, it is evaluated through a real SBP scenario from medical domain in the context of the organization of protection of the motor disabled people of Sfax-Tunisia (ASHMS).

Several definitions were proposed in the literature for the notion of a BP, among them we cite the two following: According to [1] “A business process is a collection of activities that takes one or more kinds of inputs and creates outputs that is of value for the customer. A business process has a goal and is affected by events occurring in the external world or other processes”. According to [2] “A business process is a set of logically related tasks performed to achieve a defined business outcome”. BP may be represented by a BP model (and its corresponding diagram in a graphical notation), which usually comprises the control flow of well-structured activities that an organization performs to achieve its objectives.

2
The first facet of knowledge capitalization process concerns problems bound to the identification and localization of crucial knowledge, that is knowledge (explicit knowledge) and knowhow (tacit knowledge) which are necessary for decision-making processes and for the progress of the essential processes which constitute the heart of the activities of the company: it is necessary to identify them, to localize them, to characterize them, to make cartographies of them, to estimate their economic value and to organize them into a hierarchy [7].
.

4
Internalization – generation of new knowledge, when new tacit knowledge is generated from explicit knowledge. Externalization – materialization of knowledge, when tacit knowledge is transformed into explicit knowledge. Combination – use of existing explicit knowledge to create new explicit knowledge. Socialization – sharing knowledge, when existing tacit knowledge is used for the generation of new tacit knowledge.

5
With respect to our notation, the informal labels on BPM4KI concepts appear in the text in the Courrier new font with First Capital Letters for the concepts and a javaLikeNotation for relations. The same conventions apply for the COOP ontology [11] presented in the paper.

6
A special type of process activity that is not enough specified to be systematically executed. Its execution is based on previous experiences and tacit knowledge from its executor, may require specialty, may comprise innovation, or may involve making decisions. This activity is unpredictable and defined at runtime [43].

7
According to [55], an intention is a complex process whose content includes a representation of action, thus allowing an agent to be directed to that action. A distal intention plans the action (before its initiation) and then rationally controls to guide it and determine its success. This is a process whose content has an objective and a plan [54].

8
- An Internal process is a Business Process all partsOf which haveForAgent either Humans which areAffiliatedTo the Business Organization or Organization Units which areAUnitsOf the Business Organization . - An External process is a Business Process all partsOf which haveForAgent Agentive Entities which are not AffiliatedTo nor UnitsOf the Business Organization . - A partial external process is a Business Process which has at least one Part which hasForAgent an Agentive Entity which is not AffiliatedTo the Business Organization and which has at least one Part which hasForAgent an Agentive entity which isAffiliatedTo the Business Organization .

Since in practice, Process-oriented knowledge modeling approaches are very incipient and used less often than BPM formalisms, we are particularly interested in adapting and extending the widely applicable modeling notations that can represent KM issues in BP models clearly and with a sufficient level of details. In brief, the best characteristics of BPMN are: (i) BPMN is the de facto standard for BPM; (ii) BPMN is very expressive and rich of concepts for modeling process logic, decision points, control flows, various processes and event types, offering a very complex expressive model of BPs; (iii) BPMN is a simple notation, easy to use and readily understandable by all business stakeholders; (iv) BPMN is one of the most recent BPMLs, so it is grounded on the experience of earlier BPMLs, which ontologically makes it one of the most complete BPMLs; (v) BPMN is supported by almost all popular BPM tools; (vi) BPMN is extensible, etc.
