Abstract
Caring for patients with head and neck tumors in any setting requires careful consideration of functional, oncologic, and cosmetic outcomes. In the resource-limited setting, certain challenges are often associated with providing high-quality care for these patients, including limited imaging, histopathology and rehabilitation services, few radiation and medical oncology colleagues, and a lack of complex reconstructive capabilities. The head and neck surgeon must be prepared to adapt accordingly. A range of head and neck tumors are reviewed, including those of the larynx, maxilla and hard palate, thyroid, parotid gland, mandible, skin of the head and neck, nasal cavity, and paranasal sinuses, with discussion of considerations particular to the diagnosis and management of each pathology. Tracheostomy and neck dissection are also discussed. Focus is placed on pathologies commonly encountered in sub-Saharan Africa. This chapter is intended to provide a framework for approaching surgical care of head and neck tumors in the resource-limited setting.
