Abstract

“All models are wrong; but some are useful.” This adage by the statistician George Box contains the rationale for verification, validation, and accreditation (VV&A) (Box, 1979). Together, they are meant to answer the question of whether a model is useful (for a given purpose). In this chapter, we define and discuss the terms and the practice of VV&A as it has applied to combat models and to models of unconventional conflict. In the process, we develop a prescription for its application.
