Abstract
Italy is both the ‘country of first arrival’ for many refugees who come to Europe by sea and a provisional stage in a longer route. This chapter reconstructs, through the analysis of 21 qualitative interviews with activists, the forms of action that have emerged during the ‘long summer of migration’ along the Italian migrant route.
In particular, the chapter addresses the development of solidarity practices across space and time. Regarding space, it is observed that different places, independently of their position along the route, take on the role of borders, due to the expression of state power in blocking the migrants’ path and creating the emergency situations to which the movement answers. Regarding time, the chapter addresses the transition from emergency-based direct social actions to politics-oriented episodes of contention, both as a development of previous solidarity action and as a response to initiatives taken by the state and by anti-refugee actors.
