Abstract

This chapter debates how Netflix can be positioned within a system of national and transnational television. Within a decentred media system, it is important to consider how Netflix is positioned within a dialectic relationship between ideological constructs of ‘the nation’ and transnational television and the global exchange of cultural products. Traditionally, television has produced texts for national markets before exporting them. Within foreign markets, it is possible to domesticate television by placing imports within nationally specific schedules and via translation. Yet, Netflix has to consider transnationalism from the outset by offering possibilities for domestication in its markets from the start. Though not out of reach of regulatory systems that control media markets, Netflix still operates distinct from ‘traditional’ national and transnational broadcasting. Thus, this chapter considers how Netflix can be conceptualised as transnational broadcaster.

Of course, this is why music videos work very well on YouTube: they fulfil a similar function as they did for MTV.

However, in the case of Scream, this may also be linked to national regulations on representations of violence.

Benedict Anderson argues that print media was a primary mode for readers to imagine themselves as parts of a ‘national audience’. Yet, while early editions of Anderson’s Imagined Communities argue for the important role mass media has played in constructing national identities, later editions argue that his “short-sighted assumption then was that official nationalism in the colonised worlds of Asia and Africa was modelled directly on that of the dynastic states of nineteenth century Europe” (2016, 162). As Anderson’s work, thus, indicates, nationalism is not uniquely tied to mass media, even though the link is strong in some countries. This points to how pluralistic ‘the nation’ is.

Transnational news broadcasters, such as Al Jazeera, remain situated within specific territories, thus emphasising news from their own region over others.

5
At the behest of US rights holders, Netflix’ geo-blocking software became more effective in late 2014, a year of major Netflix expansion into non-US territories. This made the use of VPN software to access proxy servers to then access Netflix more difficult.

The announcement of a ‘truly Polish service’ was quickly followed by an announcement of ‘a truly Turkish service’, though this is reflected neither in dubbing nor subtitling practices. Both announcements seem to mostly describe the partnering with local broadband and mobile phone providers to allow easy payment in local currencies.
