Class, race, gender… neighbourhood? Zur Bedeutung von Quartierseffekten in der europäischen Stadtforschung

Zusammenfassung

Die Beschäftigung mit dem städtischen Raum und seiner Rolle bei der Produktion sozialer Ungleichheit kann auf eine lange Tradition zurückblicken. Schon im 19. Jahrhundert waren die Quartiere des Proletariats aufgrund miserabler Wohnund Lebensbedingungen und der sowohl politischen als auch moralischen Gefahr, die von ihnen auszugehen schien, Gegenstand politischer Diskussionen und Reformen. Die Analyse der räumlichen Dimension von Benachteiligung erfuhr ab dem Ende der 1980er Jahre im Rahmen der Forschung zu Quartierseffekten eine neue Dynamik in der amerikanischen Armuts- und Segregationsforschung. Vor dem Hintergrund zunehmender sozialräumlicher Spaltungslinien existiert nun auch in Europa ein starkes Interesse an der Fragestellung, welche Folgen das Leben in einem armen Quartier für seine Bewohner mit sich bringt, und für europäische Städte liegen inzwischen eine Reihe von Studien zu Quartierseffekten vor.
