The progress of failure in materials, under various loading conditions, is assumed to involve the degradation of structure due to nucleation and growth of defects, such as micro-voids and micro-cracks, and their coalescence into macro-cracks [2-1, 2-2]. This process, generically termed damage, was first used to predict the creep rupture of metals in service at elevated temperatures [2-3].
