Die in diesem Text vorgenommene Unterscheidung zwischen Interessenkonflikten und Pflichtenkollision folgt der Diktion, die Lo und Field (2009, S. 45–48) im Bericht des Institute of Medicine vorschlagen. Ein ethisches Dilemma muss allerdings nicht notwendigerweise aus der Kollision zweier ethischer „Pflichten“ bestehen, sondern bezieht sich auf den Konflikt zwischen zwei gleichrangigen Werten – beispielsweise zwei als gleichrangig erachteten Interessen.
