Abstract

Tourism is considered as one of the most important economic activities for Greece, one of the essential pillars for development, and a major source of income and employment. Tourism contributes more than 18 % of the total GDP of Greece.

The present harsh financial and social conditions of Greece have dramatically revealed the fundamental weaknesses of its economic structure, including its tourism sector. However, the new era that seems to have emerged from this crisis, introduces the opportunity of adopting a new tourism development model, based on sustainable exploitation of land, infrastructural advancement, and a new framework for investments supported by appropriate institutional amendments.

This chapter aims to identify the distortions caused by the present manner of functioning of the Greek tourism industry, and the new possibilities and potentials that are emerging from the institutional and organisational reform that Greek society is experiencing at present.
