Countertrade has emerged since the early 1970s as a significant medium of world trade and includes a wide range of commercial mechanisms for reciprocal trade such as barter, counterpurchase, buyback, offset, clearing and switch trading. Countertrade may be useful when – a firm faces a lack of demand or its products have reached the end of the product life cycle,– a government wants to protect or stimulate the output of domestic industries, or– a worldwide recession forces the firms to accept countertrade transactions as a means of gaining contracts. From a short-term economic point of view, engaging in countertrade may help overcoming a temporary crisis; however, countertrade does not provide a viable basis for a longer-term trading strategy with the objective of long-run profitability.
