Abstract
The most important sources of heavy metal contamination in their order of significance are air pollution, river sediments, sewage sludges, town waste composts, agricultural chemicals, and industrial waste.
Lead accumulation in plants near highways and roads has decreased considerably since the law controlling the lead content of petrol came into force. Hazardous amounts of lead, however, are still concentrated 10–20 m along the sides of highways and roads, and in the strip of up to 5 m there are also higher concentrations of cadmium.
Soil properties such as texture, pH-value, and ion exchange capacity strongly influence the availability of trace metals to plants. Lead, chromium, and mercury are usually quite tightly fixed in soils, whereas cadmium and zinc can be readily absorbed from there by plant roots. Food and forage contamination with lead is usually due to emission from the air rather than to its uptake from soils.
Guidelines are discussed for critical contents in town waste materials, plants, and soils. Considerable differences in the uptake exist not only between elements and soil types, but also depending on the plant families, plant species, and plant organs concerned. Relatively low concentrations in staple foods may be more hazardous than higher contents in food items consumed in small amounts.
Excess exposure of animals and man by high contents in plants is possible with lead, cadmium, and thallium (and to some extent also with copper), whereas zinc, nickel, chromium, and mercury are more toxic to plants than the hazard which such food plants constitute to their consumers.
Fortunately, critical heavy metal contents in plants and soils have so far been ascertained in small areas only. The areas with the highest accumulation of heavy metals in soils and plants are found in the vicinity of industrial plants, cities, and rivers.
