Aus Vereinfachungsgründen wird an dieser Stelle auf die Unterscheidung von „Psychologie“ und „Organisationspsychologie“ verzichtet. Definitorisch ist die Betrachtung des Erlebens und Verhaltens von Menschen in Organisationen der Organisationspsychologie zuzurechnen (vgl. von Rosenstiel et al. 2005, S. 20).

Auch die Emotions-, Temperament- und Persönlichkeitsforschung stützen die These von zwei unabhängigen Motivationssystemen. Allgemein akzeptiert ist dabei, dass die Tendenz zu positiven oder negativen Emotionen zu einem wesentlichen Teil angeboren ist. Zum genauen Ablauf dieser neuronalen Prozesse in den unterschiedlichen Gehirnregionen vgl. Grawe 2004, S. 144 f.

Die Persönlichkeitsfaktoren „Neurotizismus“, „Extraversion“, „Offenheit für Erfahrungen“, „Verträglichkeit“ und „Gewissenhaftigkeit“ sind Bestandteile des Fünf-Faktoren-Modells. Dieses Modell wird in Form eines Tests durchgeführt, um die Persönlichkeit eines Menschen zu analysieren (vgl. Bourne und Ekstrand 2001, S. 364 f.).

Es wird eine Vielzahl von gleichzeitig ablaufenden Prozessen angenommen. Jene zu erfassen und zu operationalisieren, kann gegenwärtig nicht bewältigt werden (vgl. Grosse Holforth et al. 2004, S. 11).
