Abstract

Carl Gustaf Mosander’s discoveries of lanthanum and didym in ceria and of erbium and terbium in yttria were communicated in a paper read at the 13th meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science held at Cork, Ireland, August 17–23, 1843. The title of the paper was On the new metals, Lanthanium and Didymium, which are associated with Cerium; and on Erbium and Terbium, new metals associated with Yttria (1). It was read by Mosander’s brother-in-law, the Irish dragoon-major North Ludlow Beamish, who lived in Cork and was President of the Cork Scientific and Literary Society. He had also translated the paper into English. The paper attracted great attention. It was printed the same year in the October issue of the Philosophical Magazine and translations of it also appeared before long in German and French journals (1). The main part of the paper had been read by Mosander in Swedish under the title Något om Cer och Lanthan (Something on Cerium and Lanthanum) at the 3rd meeting of Skandinaviska Naturforskare-Sällskapet (Scandinavian Association) held in Stockholm, July 13–19, 1842 (2).
