Abstract

Since the beginning of the 19th century peroxidases have attracted the attention of chemists, biologists and physiologists. These oxido-reductases catalyze the oxidation of a variety of organic as well as inorganic electron donors such as Cl-, Br-, I- or SCN- by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or other hydroperoxides (ROOH). The overall catalyzed reaction for an organic electron donor is:

$${{H}_{2}}{{O}_{2}} + 2A{{H}_{2}} \to 2A{{H}^{o}} + 2{{H}_{2}}O$$

where AH2 is the electron donor and AH° the oxidized product which may react further. In this reaction, one electron step oxidations (Chance, 1949) occur. In general the products are highly colored and the reaction can be monitored by eye.
