Part of the book series: Solid Earth Sciences Library ((SESL,volume 4))

Abstract

The expression ‘geothermics of the Earth’ is understood to be restricted to the solid Earth and is usually shortened to geothermics. Hence, the field of geothermics starts as soon as the solid Earth has been entered. Geothermal phenomena above the Earth’s solid surface (geothermics of the hydrosphere and atmosphere) are considered only if they affect the subsurface conditions in terms of boundary conditions, such as palaeoclimatic temperature changes, annual air temperature variations, and incoming solar radiation.
