Sample Similarity and Species Correlation

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Handbook of Vegetation Science ((HAVS,volume 5-2))

Abstract

Correlations between species most often arise from biotope differences affecting their distributions. They are of interest for the light they throw on species biology, as a tool in the classification or ordination of plant communities, and as a means of testing the homogeneity of vegetation (Goodall 1953, Dagnelie 1962a, b). Similarity between vegetation samples may also be used as a tool in ordination or classification. Similarity between samples and correlation between species are two sides of the same coin. It is by their occurrence in a group of similar communities that a group of correlated species may be recognized, and it is through the fact that stands include a number of correlated species that they are recognized as similar. General discussions of these questions will be found in a number of books, such as those of Greig-Smith (1964), Pielou (1969b), Gounot (1969) and Vasilevich (1969).
