Cyprinid Fishes

Part of the book series: Fish & Fisheries Series ((FIFI,volume 3))

Abstract

Cyprinids are basically freshwater fishes: about 99% of total world catches of these species originate from inland waters. Moreover, cyprinids are more common in Europe than anywhere else: 55–70% of overall cyprinid catches in the world are obtained in Europe and the USSR (mostly the European part) (FAO, 1987). Hence, this chapter is devoted to cyprinid fishery and management in fresh waters of the temperate zone, particularly Europe.
