Abstract

Erosion and soil degradation form an increasing threat to land throughout the world. The severity of this threat is difficult to quantify as basic data have not been collected or analysed. In this Chapter the present condition and future perspectives for soil erosion in western Europe and elsewhere are addressed by presenting what is probably the first survey of the regional pattern of soil erosion in western Europe based on information supplied by local experts. The potential impact of climatic change on soil erosion in two regions of Europe where soils are potentially sensitive to degradation is then considered and a program whereby data on land degradation are being collected to enable the world scale of the problem to be identified is then described. These three topics are complementary and they have been integrated in an attempt to make a combined statement about the impact of land use changes on erosion. The Chapter is divided into a number of Sections. Section 12.2 presents a consideration of the distribution of erosion and land degradation and discusses the underlying explanation for the observed patterns, and Section 12.3 discusses the available information base. Section 12.4 considers the problem of mapping erosion and land degradation on a European and world scale. Section 12.5 considers the potential impact of climatic change on erosion in two regions of Europe where erosion is currently a hazard.
