The Serpentine Flora in the Eastern Rhodopes Mountains (Bulgaria)

Abstract

The object of the present investigation is the serpentine flora in the Eastern Rhodopes Mts. (Cherna planina). Until now no special attention was paid to the serpentine flora in Bulgaria. An exception is the find of Festuca oviniformis Vett., in the serpentines in the Eastern Rhodopes Mts. (Kozuharov, 1985). The interest in the serpentine flora arouses by the fact that the bulgarian serpentine bodies are older with a greater chemical variety of the rocks, the soils and the plants respectively (Kozuharova, 1984) compared to those found in Albania, Greece and former Yugoslavia. Our pilot results do not claim to comprehensiveness.
