Abstract
Fewer people are dying in fires in the UK and USA than ever before. In the US fire deaths fell by 7.8% to 4275 between 1993 and 1994. This compares with more than 5000 in 1990, more than 6000 in 1988 and more than 7000 in 1979 [1]. Since 1977, fire deaths have declined by about 42%. The decline in the UK is not as dramatic as that in America, but the number of people dying in fires has fallen significantly in the last few years.
