Abstract

Dynamism is one of the most apparent characteristics of the big city. Everyone is used to the fact that there is a continuous flow of demolition, construction, and reconstruction, that people move into the city, change their address within it, or move away. Consequently, their high mobility, at least by Dutch standards, sets the big cities apart. Nevertheless, dynamism does not always imply fundamental changes in functions and structure. By today’s norms, for instance, Amsterdam showed extremely high mobility rates during the period between the two World Wars. In some neighborhoods and housing market segments, between 25 and 35 percent of the dwellings turned over annually. Yet at the level of the neighborhood, this did not cause dramatic changes in the age composition of the population in most cases, or of their social status levels (Jobse 1988).
